The ACARA EAL/D Teacher Resource contains annotated content descriptions from Kindergarten to Year 10 in English, mathematics, science and history. Please cross-reference this Australian curriculum content with your NSW syllabuses. EAL/D specialist teachers should refer to the ESL Scales to inform their planning, programming and teaching.


EAL/D

In planning for and implementing the unit, the teacher draws on various components of ACARA's EAL/D Teacher Resource including the EAL/D learning progression to monitor the student students' language proficiency and the English and EAL/D annotated content descriptions. These annotated content descriptions provide relevant teaching strategies.

The unit will enable students to create extended oral, written and multimodal texts with a degree of accuracy in structure, language and register. Strategies for collecting, organising and presenting ideas and information continue to be developed. Bridging Unit 4 is aimed at students who are in the late Developing phase of the EAL/D Foundation.

EAL/D learners are plurilingual. EAL/D students come to school with a complex set of language skills for learning, and English is a developing part of this repertoire (Busch, 2012). Their knowledge of their multiple languages is interconnected and integrated, even if they have different degrees of proficiency and literacy in Standard Australian.

This EAL/D learning progression describes a progression of English language learning typical of students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D). It has developed primarily for teachers who are not EAL/D specialists.
